There have been several reports suggesting thatAkshay Kumar will be playing the lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's remake of the Tamil hit Ramanaa (2002). Now, we've also learnt that the Hindi remake of film is called Gabbar and that Akshay's character in it too will be called Gabbar. Of course, the name makes you think of the villain from Sholay (1975) played by Amjad Khan. However, his role isn't inspired from Sholay and bears no similarity to the iconic baddie.

New direction South director Krish bags Akshay Kumar's next; Sanjay Leela Bhansali to produce it

Akshay Kumar has been signed to play the lead in Gabbar, the Hindi remake of Tamil film Ramanaa, but the director's seat was empty till now. A source says, "Many names came up for the post. At first, it was the famous south director AR Murugadoss being signed on, as he had directed the original but later south director Jayam Raja's name came up too. But now the makers have finally roped in another popular director from the south, Krish, to direct Gabbar. It will be his directorial debut in Bollywood." Krish has delivered many hit Telugu films such as Gamyam (2008) and Vedam (2010) and is one of the most sought-after directors down south.

Though the film is touted to start shooting mid-2013, the makers apparently aren't in a hurry to cast the female lead. There were speculations of Tamannaah being considered, but that was before her debut Hindi film Himmatwala bombed.
