Hang the rapist publicly: Akshay Kumar

Born in the capital of India, Akshay Kumar has always been a Delhiite at heart. Probably that’s why he is even more hurt at the state of the city’s lawlessness.

Disturbed by the recent brutal rape of a five-year-old girl, the actor says, “I’m appalled and disgusted by what has happened. And

I’m deeply saddened by the fact that it is all happening in the city I grew up in. It’s heart-wrenching to even think about the trauma the poor girl must’ve gone through.”

Having recently become a father of a baby girl, Akshay seems even more disheartened. “It's not just being a Delhiite that makes it worse; it’s being a father that really shatters me, knowing that my worst fear in life is coming true in the city that I ran around in as a child. Just thinking about what that poor girl went through is gut-wrenching for any parent. My heartfelt prayers go out to her family, may she recover and grow to forget this horrendous incident.”

Even though the government and other agencies have been working to create awareness about gender equality and better the existing laws to protect women, Akshay feels a more hard-hitting solution is needed. “Hang the rapist publicly, without further delay; set an example,” he says.

“This animalistic behaviour needs to stop. It’s a waste of time to even start the lectures on new laws for women, police reforms etc. We did that a few months back (in December when the Delhi gang-rape incident took place) and clearly it has not worked.”
